Finding, Knowing, and Setting Your Boundaries

Woo-eeeee! 😅 I just drew some boundaries today and it sucked, at first (my people-pleasing perfectionistic tendencies were howling at me as I withdrew myself from certain commitments).

But then came FREEDOM and wow, was it worth the suck! LOL.

So I ask…

How good are you at drawing boundaries? Are you easily swayed by others? Do you struggle to say no?

This week’s WELLNESS WEDNESDAY practice?

Find your boundaries with the short meditation listed here (it’s the last one on the list!).

How does this practice fit my definition of career wellness ?

Being deeply connected to self is a huge piece of CAREER WELLNESS (definition here) and to this end, being able to feel, know, and set your boundaries is absolutely essential to feeling whole and integrated.

What SCP podcast episode(s) can I listen to for help on boundary setting?

Episode 104, Setting boundaries with Dr. Shaun Marq Anderson

Happy summer!

Danielle ❤️

P.S. I can teach you how to set boundaries and create space for yourself so that you can build your career on a foundation of wellness. When you feel good, the sky’s the limit! Check out the Sabbatical Program here. Registration closes July 6.

Process your emotions, find your career vision.

“How do I get rid of this feeling? What’s the problem? How do I solve it?”

These are the questions I asked myself when I woke up with a lot of sadness this morning.

We all do this. We try to solve the “problem” of our emotions so we can carry on with our day.

We see emotions as obstacles: scary, uncomfortable, and getting in the way of our to-do lists!

The problem with just “managing” our emotions and not engaging/processing them?

UNDIGESTED EMOTIONS STAY IN OUR BODIES and create heaviness, fogginess, and lethargy. And as the layers of undigested emotions build, the MORE INACCESSIBLE OUR CAREER (and life) VISIONS.

This week’s WELLNESS WEDNESDAY practice?

  • When you wake up each morning, ask yourself what you’re feeling emotionally and BE HONEST.
  • Journal about it, meditate on it, or walk it out.

How does this practice fit my definition of career wellness (definition here)?

Being deeply connected to self is a huge piece of CAREER WELLNESS and to this end, leaving space to process your emotions is absolutely essential.

What SCP podcast episode(s) can you listen to for help with processing your emotions?

  • Episode 99, “Project Jenn” with Dr. Jenn Berg
  • Episode 109, “The Thing Beneath” with Dr. Corey Latta

Btw, in the Sabbatical Program, I’ll hold a WHOLE LOT of space for you to process your emotions and find your vision. We start August 1! You coming? Check it out here!

What is career wellness anyway?

What is career wellness anyway?

So I know I’m always talking about CAREER WELLNESS and maybe you’ve thought to yourself, “What is career wellness anyway?”

I know, I know. The term feels vague.

So in an attempt to ground the term, I offer a short (and admittedly inadequate) definition:

Nonetheless…

CAREER WELLNESS, in my mind, refers to the PROCESS of:

  • connecting meaningfully to self and others
  • working in flow and with presence
  • regularly re-calibrating along your career journey

In other words, career wellness is about staying deeply connected to yourself, others, and your environment so you can meaningfully and flexibly decide when to stay the course and when to pivot (in both small and big ways).

There’s so much more to say about career wellness(!!), which is why I’m reviving the blog in order to highlight one wellness practice every Wednesday. My WEDNESDAY WELLNESS posts will:

  • explain the wellness practice
  • describe how it fits my above definition of career wellness
  • reference at least one of my podcast episodes that highlights the practice

So many have reached out and asked me about podcast episodes that cover certain topics and I figure Wellness Wednesday posts will address some of these concerns.

Thoughts? Concerns? Feel free to reach out. I’m all ears!

Happy summer!!

Danielle ❤️

When you procrastinate, be kind to yourself

I just talked to a client who was telling me how frustrated she is with herself for always procrastinating on household chores. It’s usually the same scenario: she gets home from work, eats dinner, and while resting for a few minutes, she tells herself that it’s time to do household chores. As she procrastinates, she gets angry with herself, the anger builds momentum, and soon she feels exhausted and hopeless. Sound familiar? Here are three steps (based on the research done in the field of Acceptance and Commitment therapy) that can help her–and you–move more easily in a direction that feels freeing:

Finding meaningful relationships in academia

I LOVE listening to podcasts because I get to feel like I’m with a group of friends, engaged in meaningful conversation. My academic work doesn’t create much room for this kind of connection so I look for it in other places. Yet, as Berg and Seeber (2016) note, when we don’t connect meaningfully to other academics, we get caught up in the shame game. Drawing on the work of Brene Brown, they write:

Academic shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we aren’t as smart or capable as our colleagues, that our scholarship and teaching isn’t as good as that of our colleagues, that our comments in a meeting or at a speaker event aren’t as rigorous as that of our colleagues, and therefore we are unworthy of belonging to the community of great minds (p. 87).
