SCP Community

Welcome!! We’re so glad you’re here!

Who we are

We are a community of academics, former academics, and independent scholars all on career wellness journeys. Most of us have experienced (or are experiencing) intense addiction to career success and the pain of burnout. Community members are seekers of a better way, committed to engaging in a longterm practice of career discernment, which includes:

  • listening for and responding to the messages of inner wisdom
  • trusting the unfolding path toward career wellness
  • practicing the ongoing work of deep self-reflexivity

What we do

As a community, we meet regularly on Zoom to:

  • Actively make space for individual and group wisdom
  • Provide refuge to members during times of career crisis, struggle, and challenge
  • Help members release stories, careers, jobs, and situations that no longer serve them
  • Support members to progress toward their own unique vision of career wellness
  • Invite feelings of gratitude, self-celebration, and joy for career successes and resources we have earned and/or acquired over the course of our careers

When we meet

Except for the occasional “off week,” we hold multiple meetings per week. We encourage members to listen to their own wisdom about how often to attend and what sessions to attend. We want your community engagement to be supportive of your own career wellness and for some, less is more. We support career wellness and self-compassion by meeting for:

  • Planning sessions: weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual planning sessions/retreats are intended to help us re-set and align to our values and wisdom
  • Pausing sessions: during our designated monthly rest weeks, we digest emotions stuck in our mind-body systems as well as practice “doing nothing” in short rest sessions intended to help us practice non-attachment to work
  • “Co-working through resistance”: working alone can be hard and many of us need support so that we can show up for the parts of our work that are important to us, but we often resist doing (research, grading, grant writing, submitting job applications, etc.)
  • Circling and discerning sessions: dialogue with others so we can feel held in community, hear our own wisdom, and hear the wisdom of the community

Why we meet

Benefits of community practice for individuals include:

  • Feeling less isolated in career
  • An increasing sense of clarity and confidence about career desires and intentions
  • Being witnessed/seen in a community of academics, who understand the unique dynamics of this work
  • An overall sense of wholeness—feeling less fragmented and more anchored

How it works

In the SCP Community, we practice contemplative careering within, beyond, and between academic spaces. Through dialogue/circling, relational meditation, collective pausing, co-working through resistance, and co-planning, we grow together in community while also growing individually in career: practicing hearing our own inner wisdom, trusting our own career wellness journeys, and discerning our own “core career compass.”
